EnviroServ Roundtable

In this edition, we focus on corporates and the government’s greening initiatives. We look at what drives are currently rolled out to assist in attempts to delay or stop global warming. We thoroughly investigate the work of the Green Scorpions; and how concerned South Africans should work hand in hand with these environmental police.

Are you thinking waste? If not, the Green Scorpions are!

A recent conversation with a colleague had me concerned. To my dismay, she announced that about 90% of municipalities do not meet permit and compliance regulations. Alarmed, I went to investigate what the South African government was doing about this issue. If issues such as these are not dealt with appropriately, all citizens can expect disastrous consequences to the planet.

The Environmental Management Inspectors’ main purpose is to ensure that the regulated community adheres and complies with environmental legislation. Popularly referred to as the Green Scorpions, the over 940 inspectors have undergone extensive training and are from various Government Departments at municipal, provincial and national level. Mandated to enforce the recently introduced Air Quality Act, the Protected Areas Act, National Environment Act (Nema) and the Biodiversity Act, this inspectorate has authority to enter premises to carry out inspections during which they may take samples and collect other evidence of non-compliance. Furthermore, in relation to criminal investigations, they have the powers of search and seizure.

On the 27th of May 2007, Operation Ferro, which is a national campaign for environmental compliance in the iron, steel, and ferroalloy industries, was launched. These industries were specifically targeted as their processes can cause unmatched pollution, especially if they are not well managed. The Green Scorpions have a range of enforcement mechanisms that they may use in cases of non-compliance. In certain instances, businesses may be shut down if there is significant non-compliance. If a business fails to take necessary action to achieve compliance within the necessary timeframe, it might face the full wrath of the Green Scorpions.

The government has had to take some fairly drastic measures in order to protect our natural resources. A total of 180 magistrates were specifically trained in adjudicating environmental crimes. Companies who are not fully co-operative may even face prosecution. The NPA may prosecute if evidence shows that there have been elements of criminality. A rule proving effective is that the Green Scorpions must not be hindered from performing their duties. Giving the Green Scorpions false information is equally detrimental to the Company.

Additionally, an equal measure of the Green Scorpions’ task is to educate the public about the environment, and their role in participating and protecting it.

Businesses against energy waste:
There are constant calls and reminders to be energy conscious. We have numerous NGOs worldwide, all involved in educating the public about the impeding dangers of being wasteful. What are we as corporates doing to boost attempts of greening the future? Profit should no longer be the sole motivation of businesses’ operations. To avoid natural resources diminishing, there has to be accountability. Otherwise, we all face catastrophic consequences. As is the norm, it will be the poor who feel the consequences faster than any other persons. Businesses must start making small, but critical contributions.
Below is a comprehensive list of what businesses could do to aid with greening initiatives:
1.

We must utilise energy saving globes and recycle them appropriately.

2. We must adhere to the Green Construction guidelines.
3. Walk or cycle to work where possible, cars emit much carbon.
4. Join a lift club to ensure that there is less cars on our roads.
5. Staff must dress appropriately for the weather.
6. In summer, we must use fans whenever possible. Fans cost less to use than air conditioners.
7. On hot days, curtains and blinds on the north, east and west windows must be closed.
8. On cold days, the sun must be let in until sunset, and then everything should be closed to retain warmth.
9. Staff must activate “sleep” features on computers and any other office equipment that power down when not in use for a while.
10. Staff must turn off equipment during longer periods of non-use.
11. The furnace on the air-conditioner filter must be checked out at least once a month, cleaned and replaced as needed. Dirty filters block air flow through heating and cooling system; this increases energy bill and shortens the equipment’s life.
12. We must use solar systems.
13. We must plant more indigenous plants that would require less water.
14. It is crucial to water gardens at night.
15. We must use environmentally friendly paper. It is a bit costly, but worth it.
Important Reminder:
The 22nd of April is an important day in South Africa.15 years into our Democracy; South Africans are once again heading to the polling stations to cast their votes for a worthy president. Happy voting!!
