We are already in the second half of 2009.It is therefore apt, that our July edition reflects on how far we have come. Sometimes to move forward, it is critical to look back. We are glad to note that the most pressing current international issue remains climate change. Further more; Green- consciousness is at an all time high. It's about time!
Our May issue served to inform you that our Recycling Division had partnered with the Comrades; we give you feedback on that. The most recent issue looked at the Tailings Division; we thought it appropriate to expand on one of this division's services. |

| Land Remediation and Rehabilitation |
|
| Land Rehabilitation is described in the Investopedia as a re-engineering process that attempts to restore an area of land back to its natural state after it has been damaged as a result of some sort of disruption. The process involves such things as removing all man -made structures, toxins and other dangerous substances, improving the soil conditions and adding new flora. |

In the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, land contamination becomes a punishable offence. In order to rectify the situation, a site assessment needs to be done by an independent person. A Site Assessment Report needs to be issued to the relevant Department and by law, a person can be ordered to remediate land.
This implies that a person will be requested to remove pollutants or contaminants from soil in order to protect human health and the environment.
EnviroServ is ideally placed to ensure effective management of these challenges. We have been cleaning up pollutants and contaminants for the last 30 years. We have experience in dealing with the most harmful and hazardous substances. Our track record of dealing with these substances in a professional and environmentally responsible manner speaks for itself.
It does not end there, in order to ensure effective rehabilitation; this area needs to be "fixed" in order to sustain growth. Rehabilitation is much more than just dumping soil on a heap and hoping plants will grow. It is a highly technical field which involves effective planning, soil amelioration, legal authorisations, earthworks (in many cases), re-vegetation and monitoring.
EnviroServ teams up with leading consultants in the field to ensure the effective planning considers groundwater, surface water, soil and air as pathways for pollutants or contaminants. We have a seamless integration as we manage the entire process. The client is not forced to be the bridge between a consulting company and an operational company. We have scientists on board with years of practical experience, they assist with onsite management.
The success of our ventures lies with our multidisciplinary approach. The environment is a complex combination of factors which need to be managed simultaneously. |

| What a milestone: 31% of Comrades' waste was recycled this year |
|
| In our May edition, we were thrilled to announce that this year, EnviroServ partnered with the Comrades Marathon to undertake a recycling project. Each of the 47 refreshment tables were provided with a green bag for recyclable materials. Black bags were provided for general waste. Many tables participated during the day and many green bags were indeed collected for recycling! 31% of waste was taken to our recycling depot in Westmead!' This was the first time that the waste would be separated whilst the race was being run, an enormous task indeed. |

Prior to the race, it was communicated that it would be the responsibility of each sponsored table to clean the roads of all rubbish until the next water station en route. Each table was to ensure that the litter between the tables was collected and bagged. Many tables managed this well, however, there were some tables that did not come to the party. EnviroServ's responsibility was to collect the green and black bags from each of the water stations and ensure that the recyclables were maximised.
Ely Devellennes, EnviroServ's Regional Recycling Manager who was tasked with managing the EnviroServ crew on the route added that 'it was disappointing to see that certain tables had not done their bit for the environment by cleaning their area, as well as their section of road.'
Nonetheless, 31% recycled rate is a great start and many lessons were learnt. We have a baseline that can be used to set the target for the years to come! |

|
| We would like to recognise the efforts of many, and EnviroServ is proud to announce the 3 cleanest/greenest tables of the race. The tables were assessed on how clean their area was, whether they had cleaned the litter until the next table and whether plastics were put into the green bags. Well done to the companies below: |
| First place |
Sasol |
| Second place |
Eskom |
| Third place |
Queensmead Scrap |

| The top table received a floating trophy made of waste; the other winners received prizes. We are already looking forward to next year! |
