| Shongweni development ensures peace of mind: |
EnviroServ Waste Management continues to display its commitment to providing safe and effective solutions to the treatment and disposal of hazardous waste.
As a testament to this, we have commenced on a new cell at Shongweni landfill site. Work has commenced on the access roads and laydown areas where the landfill cell will be constructed. Soon, our dedicated and highly skilled team will be shaping the basin and side slopes.
Construction of the cell and adjoining liquid management facilitiy will be done strictly in accordance with the approved designs, and include a series of compacted clay layers, a leakage detection system and a 2mm geomembrane .Together, they create a composite barrier which is over 1 metre in depth. The natural topography in the Shongweni valley is very steep, hence only the most competent of contractors are used during the construction phase.
EnviroServ Tailings, with their vast array of experience, has commenced with the building of the new Cell and associated requirements. The team responsible for the construction project is being led by Martin Dolinschenk, assisted by Fanie Terblanche and Hannes Brits. Upon completion, the team would have moved a total of eighty thousand cubic meters of earth, installed seven thousand square meters of HDPE liner and laid 680m of piping.
As is the norm with EnviroServ, proper channels were followed and relevant stakeholders consulted. Comprehensive designs were done by Jonathan Shamrock from consulting engineers Jones and Wagner; and have been approved by DEAT. Although the entire Shongweni site is already permitted, part of the approval process included the completion of an Environmental Impact Control Report, EICR. This report evaluated all of the potential impacts that may emanate from the site, as well as how these potential impacts could best be prevented, avoided or mitigated. This EICR, which was undertaken by an independent Environmental Consultant, involved workshops and input from all I & APs, as well as all the relevant authorities.
