EnviroServ Roundtable

In this edition we focus primarily on HIV/AIDS in the workplace. It is crucial that businesses large and small rigorously address issues that impact on the productivity of the workforce. Indubitably, our economy too has felt the effects of this menace to society. It is possible though, to live in harmony with those living positively with HIV/AIDS.

Word out on HIV/AIDS

On average 2000 people are infected with HIV on a daily basis. The effects are felt in all spheres and businesses such as EnviroServ and I can say with certainty yours, have not been spared. Our government is currently running a multi million rand campaign called “New Start” aimed at reducing infection rate by encouraging more people to test so that they know their status.

A frequently asked question is do businesses have a moral obligation to assist or care for the over 5,700 000 South African citizens living with this dreaded disease. Of the 10 percent currently infected; the number of children less than 14 faced with this unimaginable horror is alarmingly high. This, of course, is directly attributed to the fact that child abuse which is directly linked to the spread of HIV is spiraling out of control.

Furthermore, majority of people with HIV are unaware they have the virus and thus the significant new infection cases. South Africans continue with risk behaviour such as having multiple partners.

Businesses have to take responsibility of assisting their staff in any way possible as our economy can potentially be dwarfed by this pandemic.

Recommended diet
Eating purposefully: Benefits of good nutrition:
1.

Improved functioning of the Immune system.

2. Those infected are able to deal better with medication and treatment
3. It leads to improved quality of life
4. Weight is maintained
5. Prevent muscle loss
6. Increased strength
7. Replaces lost nutrients
8. Improve wound healing
9. Quicker recovery from injections

The following measures which have been tried are guaranteed to aid with HIV reduction in all businesses if effectively implemented:

Voluntary free testing should be offered to all staff

There needs to be an intense know your status drive which targets management and all other workers (this illness does not discriminate)
Pre and post counseling services by qualified professionals
There needs to be a qualified professional employed by each organisation to advise staff on health and diet- EnviroServ as an example employs a full time Occupational Health sister who deals with all staff matters empathetically
Peace of mind about HIV transmission
There is a lot of ignorance around how HIV is transmitted. There are still people who refuse to use a cup or a spoon which had been used by a person who is infected. This behaviour is appalling, especially if practiced at work where we spend much of our time.

Businesses can assist with ensuring that their staff that is brave enough to reveal their status is not discriminated against. We can educate everybody on how this virus is transmitted from one person to the other.

HIV is passed on when bodily fluids from an infected person enters the body of an uninfected person.

“HIV can enter the body through a vein (e.g., injection drug use), the lining of the anus or rectum, the lining of the vagina and/or cervix, the opening to the penis, the mouth, other mucous membranes (e.g., eyes or inside of the nose), or cuts and sores. Intact, healthy skin is an excellent barrier against HIV and other viruses and bacteria.

What a sight: macho men and powerful machines together for the environment

The recent spade of power outages has impacted on all of us. This has meant that businesses which provide essential services (waste management) such as EnviroServ have had to find creative ways of addressing this issue.

Business carries on as usual as man and machine have had to adjust to operating efficiently with our unique challenges in mind. At Treatment and Disposal Solutions (TDS) which disposes of hazardous toxic waste and medical waste such as gloves and syringes nothing can hamper these men when modern invention disappoint. With power outages, generator and men are roped in.

Waste is placed in a large Incinerator which burns everything at a minimum 950 degrees to a maximum of 1150 degrees. This is an acceptable method of treatment of waste streams that are toxic or not readily biodegradable. Mixed with lime which is loaded manually into the incinerator, the hazardous material is reduced to fine ash that poses no threat to either the environment or the communities’ health and safety.

Precautionary measures are taken to ensure that the safety of the workers is not compromised in any way. Provision is made for workers’ shoes, they are furthermore provided with gloves, face shields and respirators as at times they are forced to shovel the burning fires to ensure that all waste is completely destroyed.

Good news is that we are compliant with regulations as set out by the Department of Agriculture and Environment which works very closely with the Department of Health. Our ever cautious and vigilant SHEQ Department also ensures that oxygen levels are not tampered with as toxic waste is reduced to light smoke.

We are certain that as our client one of your main concerns is environmental well being. Rest assured; we will appropriately dispose off the waste generated as a result of your workers taking a stand against HIV/AIDS.
