Response to sabotage allegations:
|
Dear Valued stakeholder
On 29 November 2009 The Sunday Times gave details of highly infectious raw medical waste, including bloody swabs and body parts collected from South Africa's biggest state and private hospitals, which had been unearthed at various illegal sites in the Free State.
This matter has enjoyed much media attention over the past two weeks. We have been confronted with ever more shocking details and pictures on an almost daily basis.
EnviroServ is of course very disturbed by these revelations which do not serve the reputation and expected level of professionalism for the waste industry very well. We support the efforts of the Environmental Management Inspectorate, the “Green Scorpions”, in uncovering such instances of lawlessness and abuse of the environment.
Some of the responses by the alleged perpetrators have been astonishing, including allegations of bribery and competitive mischief. Following these rather disturbing claims EnviroServ thinks it is appropriate to put on record that EnviroServ is in no way involved with the events which have taken place in Welkom.
The board of directors of EnviroServ took a strategic decision to exit from the health care waste market in 2007. Consequent to this decision we no longer offer a container supply or collection service to any health care waste generators. All EnviroServ’s health care waste treatment facilities have been closed down, save for those at Bloemfontein and Roodepoort which continue to offer a service to all health care waste management contractors on normal commercial terms. Our facilities at Roodepoort have previously been inspected by the Environmental Management Inspectorate, the latest inspection having been carried out as recently as July 2009, and no material findings have been identified at any of these inspections, and nor were any Directives issued by the Department.
Incidents of this nature are always extremely regrettable, and will probably have caused much harm to the image of our still young and developing industry. EnviroServ continues to strive for leadership in sustainable waste management solutions, and remains committed to ensuring we support our clients and stakeholders in progressing towards more sustainable waste management practices.
Thank you for your continued loyal support for EnviroServ and the values we stand for, and also the concern shown by numerous clients and suppliers in ensuring that any unsubstantiated rumours were speedily brought to our attention.
Kind regards
Des Gordon
